The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 was between the British Empire and the mighty Zulu Kingdom that sat next to the British colony of Natal, in Southern Africa. This titanic conflict was one of the most epic and dramatic events recorded in the annals of British history. What has really brought enduring fame to this conflict was the 1964 film ZULU, depicting the battle of Rorke’s Drift. The Battle took place at the Swedish Lutheran Mission close to a drift on the Buffalo river. The Swedish missionary Peter Otto Witt purchased the trading post called Rorke’s Drift from James Rorke an Irish merchant in early 1788 and named the mission Oscarsberg. Just as his fledgeling mission was getting underway war broke out on his doorstep. Join us in this historical documentary as we explore the story of early missionary work amongst the Zulu people.
