When Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama is controversially desegregated in 1973, Tony Nathan joins the school's predominantly white football team along with several other Black players. Black and white players clash on and off the field. After a riot at the school, their coach consents to allowing travelling sports chaplain Hank Erwin to speak to the team as a 'motivational speaker'.
Amidst a backdrop of racial conflict and adversity, Woodlawn showcases how the power of faith and unity helps the team rise to prominence, bringing about a transformation not only in the players but also in their community.
